ARCHITECTURE

Færderbiennalen is an international festival for site-specific dance and architecture located in the coastal area of Tønsberg & Færder, Southern Norway. Færderbiennalen was founded in 2022 by a collective of architects and performing arts curators.

Færderbiennalen 2026 will be the third festival in a row, presenting international and Norwegian temporary architecture installations and dance performances of high artistic quality – site specific and in public space in the whole area.

Open Call Færderbiennalen 2026 – ARCHITECTURE

Færderbiennalen is looking for project proposals for temporary architectural installations to be presented in the city of Tønsberg or on the islands of Nøtterøy, Hvasser, Brøtsø and Tjøme, Vestfold county, Southern Norway. The selected projects will be presented during the Færder Biennale 2026 in the scenic coastal area of Tønsberg and Færder, Norway, within the timeframe July to August 2026. Sustainability is a central value, and both existing installations and new works will be considered. Projects will be selected by an international jury according to aesthetic, technical feasibility and sustainability criteria, as well as relevance in the geographical/ landscape area. Site responsiveness, and works that engage with the questions of placemaking, ecology and dance are relevant aspects for the selection process.

Timeline

Open call deadline: 5th December 2025

Jury selection meeting: 17th December 2025

On-site construction in Norway: July 2026, specifically 10th – 25th July 2026.

Installation timeframe: July-August 2026

Application

We are planning for a total of four architecture installations for the 2026 edition of Færderbiennalen, two of which will be selected through the international open call.

The applications should contain the following:

  • A project description (maximum 2*A3 pages) including a project title/motto
  • Examples of earlier work
  • CV

Please send your application as one pdf file (containing 2*A3 pages), CV and examples of earlier works as separate files with integrated links to external pages (video, sound and images), and name all files starting with the project title.

Large files can be sent via WeTransfer.

You can apply as an individual or a smaller collective.

The application are to be sent to: opencall@faerderbiennalen.no on 5th December 2025 at 23:59 at the latest.

Sites & Typology

The installation sites will be curated specifically for the selected projects. Projects can be proposed for specific sites, specific typologies or for a variety of environments.

Potential installation sites in Tønsberg and Færder:

  • Seaside – svaberg (rock formations polished by glaciers)
  • Open grass field
  • Seaside – beach
  • Forest landscape
  • Tønsberg town center
  • Stone quarry, Brøtsøbruddet

Fee

The projects selected for implementation for Færderbiennalen 2026 have a maximum budget frame of 13 000 euros. Færderbiennalen will facilitate the on-site construction of the installations. Selected artists/architects are expected to be on-site for the building period (up to 10 days in July). The construction budget can either be used for freight and remounting of an existing installation, or to cover material- and construction costs of new works.
